Joséphine’s Bathtub and the white sandbanks, small-group style
Le François white sandbanks are shallow banks of white sand covering about 1 km² between Îlet Thierry, Îlet Oscar, Îlet Métrente and Îlet Long. The water is never deeper than 2 metres and a barrier reef shelters it from the swell: clear, calm and turquoise. At their heart, Joséphine’s Bathtub owes its name to a legend: Empress Joséphine, born in Les Trois-Îlets, supposedly loved to bathe here.
It can only be reached by boat. With MOWATA you leave from Le François with 11 guests maximum, away from the big catamaran crowds, with a captain who tells you about the bay: star-shaped Îlet Thierry (a protected area since 2005), Joséphine’s Bathtub, Îlet Long and the mangrove, then a welcome cocktail and accras on board.
Best time: the dry season (roughly December to April) is the most popular; weekday mornings are calmer. If sargassum arrives, we adapt the route.
